A Channel of Peace

main image

I recently heard for the first time a Catholic hymn, “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace,” based on a prayer often attributed to Saint Francis. The words of the song/prayer have similarities to the text of Isaiah 61, where the prophet speaks of God’s promised blessings through the Messiah to the Church and the Church’s response of praise. While this is not a Christmas text, it does point us to the coming Christ and the hope we find in Him. I hope you will be encouraged by it today.

Make me a channel of your peace.Where there is hatred let me bring your love.Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord. And where there's doubt, true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace.Where there's despair in life let me bring hope;Where there is darkness, only light; And where there's sadness, ever joy.

Oh, Master, grant that I may never seekSo much to be consoled as to console,To be understood as to understand,To be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,In giving of ourselves that we receive,And in dying that we're born to eternal life.

Oh, Master, grant that I may never seekSo much to be consoled as to console,To be understood as to understand,To be loved as to love with all my soul.

Since Catholicism is where I began my journey and is my family’s stronghold, I’d say “instrument” not channel. We always prayed or sang, “make me an instrument of your peace…
In this Holy time of Advent…
Lord make me an instrument of your peace…
