'We're Gonna Do This'
“We’re gonna DO this,” he said quietly yet confidently as he pumped his fist in the air in front of him.
Andrew (not his real name) had just finished another practice round in preparation for the Special Olympics bowling tournament. Andrew loves bowling. He takes it seriously in that he wants to bowl well, but not so seriously that he forgets to have fun as he bowls. His face shows subtle disappointment when he leaves several pins standing at the end of a frame. He smiles widely when a lot of pins fall.
He watches the scores too. Andrew is the top bowler on his school team, but that doesn’t impress him. Last week his score was higher than the week before. That improvement motivates him. “I’m getting better,” he reported softly, yet proudly, to his teacher.
Isn’t that how we should be too? We should be learning and improving and growing. We should be having fun as we live and learn and grow.
Genesis 1 tells us that God found pleasure in the things he made and did. Ecclesiastes (3:22, 5:19-20) tells us that we should take pleasure in our lives and work too. Sure, we miss some opportunities (those pins left standing), but hopefully we’re knocking down more this week than last week, more this year than last year.
